Opening keynote. Exploring roles and directions. Creating, failing, learning

Ominous start, the house music is still playing underneath the the speaker.  I think it's steely Dan.  I hate steely Dan.  And the speaker mispronounced GIF.

Twentyonetoys.com

Cannot teach innovation with textbooks, can teach through toys.

Top three skills needed are, teamwork, problem solving, interpersonal skills

Empathy Toy, worth checking out.  Teen/tween activity?  Began designed for visual impaired community working with sighted community.

Little Bits

Best technologies have low floors, high ceilings, wide walls.  In reference to complexity of learning toys, but perhaps that thought can be extrapolated out to more than technology toys.

Hopscotch

"An easy way to create software"

Drag code blocks together to make programs .  No typing no syntax.

"Coding as a form of interactive communication"

This software is app based which makes it fairly accessible as a teaching tool.  Could be thrown on some iPads potentially.  Will have to do some R&D on that.  Hopscotch is a lot like Scratch and learning on one is pretty transferable to the other.  Interface Looks very similar.

Panel Discussion

"Ambush learning" where kids don't realize they're learning.  Later separating out the ego from what they're trying to accomplish.

Revolutionary thought:  "the more you know and the more you understand, the better off you are"

Random Last Thought, you're in a well maintained, quality location when all of the lights in the conference hall are the same temperature bulb.  If an institution can't handle the small details or doesn't care, it hints to larger disasters under the surface.
